The Engagement Model
 
At Stanton Bridge, we use the engagement model as a teacher assessment and planning tool to help us to support those pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 who are not able to engage in subject-specific study and are working below the level of the national curriculum.
 
Your child may be assessed using the engagement model if they have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) which mean they cannot demonstrate recognisable and specific skills, knowledge and understanding in:
 
   English Language; speaking and listening.
   Reading and Comprehension.
   Writing.
   Mathematics.
 
 
The engagement model is formed of 5 key areas:
  • Exploration
  • Realisation
  • Anticipation
  • Presistence
  • Initiation
The engagement model will help enable us to further monitor and track of how well a child is able to engage in the learning and development of new skills, knowledge and concepts across the curriculum.
 
It gives us the opportunity to accurately document their achievements and progress in their physical, social, emotional and cognitive development and thus tailor learning for their individual needs.

 

PIVATS

PIVATS is an assessment tool that that is used to assess pupils who are working below their chronological age expectations within the National Curriculum.

The tool allows us to track the progress of individual pupils in small steps and enables us to set individual targets for pupils to ensure that their learning is progressive and personalised to their need.

Your child may be assessed using the PIVATS scales in one, some or all of the following aspects of learning and development:

   Speaking
   Listening
   Reading
   Writing
   Maths - Number, Space, Shape and Measure, Using and Applying
 

The assessments are carried out by the pupil’s class teacher and are on-going within your child’s learning - they are not a test.

The outcomes of these assessments will be discussed at parent consultation and review meetings.

 

If a pupil has an Individual Education Plan, these assessments are recorded within this and will used to set appropriate targets.
