Curriculum

Mathematics

Within each unit, children have the opportunity to apply mathematical knowledge into real-life contexts. Pupils are provided with opportunities to develop their investigative skills by solving word problems. Pupils are taught how to develop their reasoning skills by using previously taught knowledge and mathematical vocabulary to describe the strategies used.

We use Times Tables Rock Stars (TT Rock Stars) to improve pupils’ learning and progress. This inspires pupils to practice their times tables by engaging them through fun activities and games online. It is vital that children learn their times tables as this helps build a solid foundation for future learning. This will be used as our mathematics homework resource.

English

English is taught daily and incorporates a range of reading, speaking and listening and written activities. The use of quality texts inspires the children to write effectively for a range of genres. Furthermore, the use of a text exposes children to high-level vocabulary that they can apply to their own work.

This term children will learn about the rainforest through a thought-provoking book entitled, ‘The Great Kapok Tree.’ During this topic, pupils will produce work across a range of genres. This will include: a narrative, an explanation text of deforestation and its impact on the world and a persuasive letter to the government about deforestation.

Science

In Year 5, we develop scientific knowledge and understanding of the processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries. This enables to answer scientific questions and conduct investigations about the world around us. We ensure that the pupils are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
