Home Help

On Friday of each week the children will be given home learning, with the expectation that this work is performed by the children and returned the following Wednesday. If your child needs further support with their homework, it is an expectation that this is raised to the class teacher or support staff before the homework is due. Parents are encouraged to support their children with this work, particularly in the weekly spellings in which the children are tested on a Friday. The children have also been supplied with logins for Purple Mash, an online education tool, on which homework will be set. Purple Mash also allows the children to learn through exploring and playing the many educational games available on the site.

Each week a member of staff will hear your child read and change their book as and when needed. Parents are expected to support children in reading these books on a daily basis by reminding the children to segment and blend the sounds to make words. The links below will help you say the sounds correctly.

In Year 1 we focus on children understanding the books and develop their comprehension skills before we change their book. Before, during and after the book is read we will ask the children a range of questions including what they think will happen in the book, how they think a particular character is feeling during different stages of the book and why/how a particular event happened. Please continue this at home as consistency between teachers and parents will enable the children to progress further in their reading. If you are unsure of the comprehension questions you can ask your child, please refer to the image below to help you.
