Spellings

Communication skills are essential for children to grow and interact successfully in the world. Spelling skills such as the ability to identify letters by sight and build associations between written patterns and vocal expressions are vital for successful written communication.

At Stanton Bridge we feel that spelling is one of the essential components of successful writing. Being confident when spelling leads to confidence in all aspects of literacy. As well as this, the ability to recognise links between words of the same origin and understanding word relationships has been proven to aid comprehension skills.

We understand that for children to grow into secure readers and writers, we must begin to teach spelling skills at an early age. We begin children’s spelling journey in Reception by the teaching of High Frequency Words. Children are then given spellings weekly from Year 1 to Year 6, carefully structured to develop their knowledge of spelling patterns.

Please support your child by:

  1. Practising their spellings at home daily.
  2. Looking for spelling patterns when reading their home reading books.
  3. Completing their weekly spelling home learning
  4. Praising children for achieving high scores in their weekly spelling test.
